This passage is striking for its public revelation of the intimate, private details of the relationship between a man and his wife. Men and women indoors presented a different face to men and women outdoors, under the public gaze. It also raised questions about a wife’s freedom in the home. Granted this is a lawsuit – the speaker said what he did because he calculated it would win the sympathy of 500 male jurors over the age of thirty – this is an interesting picture of a Greek wife carrying on an affair in her own home almost literally under the nose of her husband. Note that if you needed a light, you went to a shop to get one.

[Demosthenes]: the attack on the farm

In this lawcourt speech perhaps written by Demosthenes, the speaker agreed that he owed Theophemus money, and claimed that he had it waiting for him at the bank when Theophemus and his men decided to swoop on his farm and seize goods in lieu. Having taken fifty sheep, a shepherd and a slave out in the fields, they turned their attention to the household:
